Crescent City market overview
Crescent City is the last California town before Oregon, a working harbour wrapped in old-growth forest where Redwood National and State Parks meet the sea. Guests come for the trees, the tidepools and the Battery Point light, and they come overwhelmingly in summer.
The seasonal shape is unusually sharp for a coastal market. July runs at about 94% occupancy and June at 90% — close to a full house for a full quarter — with May and August close behind. Nightly rates stay modest throughout, so this is a market that earns on nights sold rather than on price.
Winter is the trade-off. January and February drop to roughly a quarter of nights sold, and December is barely better. The peak is strong enough to carry the year, but the off-season is genuinely slow, and pricing it as though it were shoulder demand leaves the calendar empty.

Vacation Rental Taxes and Regulations in Crescent City, CA
Short-term rentals are allowed here
Crescent City and Del Norte County both permit short-term rentals — stays of thirty days or fewer — and both register and tax them rather than putting them through a discretionary approval. The rate is the same either side of the city limit; who you register with is not.
Lodging and occupancy taxes
10% either way, on stays of thirty days or less, and California adds no state lodging tax. Inside the city it is levied by the City of Crescent City; outside the limits, Del Norte County levies the same ten percent on unincorporated parcels and takes returns quarterly. Ten percent is what our own Crescent City bookings are charged.
Rent for a stay running beyond thirty consecutive days by the same guest comes out of the taxable base on both sides.
Registering your rental
Inside the city, you need two things and the city issues them together: a business licence and a TOT registration. The licence requirement is broad — it covers anyone doing business within the city limits, explicitly including a business run from a home — so a vacation rental is squarely in scope. Late returns carry penalties and interest.
Outside the city, register with the Del Norte County Tax Collector for a TOT Certificate. The county also asks you to check with its Planning and Building Department whether your location needs a use permit; that turns on the parcel, so establish it early.
How Fairly handles it
We determine which side of the city limit your parcel sits on, collect and remit the occupancy tax on every booking, and assist with whichever registration applies.
Operating a vacation rental in Crescent City, CA
This is the wet, cool end of the California coast, and the climate does the damage. Persistent damp makes moisture management the recurring job — ventilation, seals, gutters, and getting on top of mildew before a guest finds it. Salt air works on hardware and fixtures with fewer dry days to recover.
Summer turnover is relentless, with June through August running near capacity and almost no slack between stays for anything but a fast, thorough clean.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a permit to run a short-term rental in Crescent City?
Inside the city limits you need a business licence and a transient occupancy tax registration, which the City of Crescent City issues together — not a discretionary use permit. Outside the limits you register with the Del Norte County Tax Collector, and the county asks you to check with Planning and Building whether your specific parcel needs a use permit.
How much lodging tax does a Crescent City rental owe?
Ten percent on stays of thirty days or fewer, whether the home is inside the city limits or in unincorporated Del Norte County — the two rates are identical, so only the filing authority changes. California levies no state lodging tax on top. Ten percent is what our own Crescent City bookings are charged.
When does Crescent City actually book?
Summer, decisively. July runs near 94% occupancy and June near 90%, with May and August close behind, so the peak quarter is close to a full house. Nightly rates stay modest, meaning the market earns on nights sold rather than price. January and February fall to roughly a quarter of nights sold.
