Getting around
Best option is to Rent a car
A rental car is the most convenient choice for guests staying at this home because San Juan is part of the larger McAllen–Edinburg–Mission area, and many of the attractions, restaurants, shopping areas, and South Padre Island are spread throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
The closest major airport is McAllen International Airport (MFE), about 7 miles from the center of the 78589 ZIP code.
There are several rental agencies at MFE, including Enterprise Rent-A-Car, as well as Avis, Budget, Dollar, Hertz and National. The airport's rental-car facilities are convenient for arriving guests.
Uber and Lyft
Uber and Lyft are also readily available in the area and are a good option for guests who don't want to rent a car.
For example, Uber estimates a San Juan-to-McAllen trip at approximately 11 minutes, although actual times and fares vary with traffic and demand.

Metro McAllen operates local bus service, and the broader Valley Metro system connects communities throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
For guests staying at this home, the bus can be useful for budget-conscious travelers, but it will generally take considerably longer than driving and isn't as convenient for sightseeing or traveling with luggage.
Getting to South Padre Island
If guests want to make a day trip to South Padre Island, I would strongly recommend having a rental car. It's approximately an hour's drive depending on traffic and the exact destination.
Having a car also makes it much easier to explore the many communities throughout the Rio Grande Valley rather than being limited to places accessible by ride share.
Getting from MFE Airport to the house:
For guests flying into McAllen:
Option 1 — Rental car:
Pick up a rental car at MFE and drive to the home. This is my recommendation for most vacation stays.
Option 2 — Uber/Lyft:
Request a ride share after collecting luggage. This is particularly economical for a couple or small group that plans to stay mostly in the San Juan/McAllen area.
Option 3 — Taxi:
Taxis are available outside the baggage claim area at MFE. The airport maintains a list of local taxi operators.
