Getting around
Arrival at Hilo International Airport (ITO) is a breeze compared to larger hubs. Once you land and collect your lei and luggage, follow these steps to reach your private acre in Keaʻau.
Transportation Options
Turo (Recommended for Speed): Most Turo hosts at ITO offer contactless pickup in the main airport parking lot (often in Row 11, just a few steps from the terminal). No shuttle required—just walk to the car, grab the keys from the lockbox, and go.
Traditional Car Rentals: On-site companies like Alamo, Enterprise, and Budget are located directly across the street from the terminal. It is a short walk; no shuttle bus is needed.
Rideshare: Uber and Lyft operate at ITO. The drive to the house is approximately 15–20 minutes and typically costs between $30–$50 depending on the time of day.
Driving Directions (15–20 Minute Drive)
Exit the Airport: Turn Left onto Kanoelehua Ave (Highway 11) heading South.
The Route: You will stay on Highway 11 for about 6 miles, passing major stores like Walmart, Target, and the Prince Kuhio Plaza on your left.
The Keaʻau Bypass: As you approach Keaʻau, stay in the left lane to merge onto Highway 130 (follow signs for Pāhoa).
Final Arrival: Follow Highway 130 for a few minutes until you reach the turn-off for the neighborhood. Detailed gate codes and specific street directions will be provided in your check-in instructions.
Host Tip: Since you’ll pass through the main shopping district on your way from the airport, we recommend stopping at Target or Safeway (15 minutes from the house) to stock up on essentials before settling into your private retreat.
Getting Around
Vehicle Type: A standard sedan is perfectly fine for reaching the house and exploring Hilo or the Volcano. However, if you plan to summit Mauna Kea, a 4WD vehicle (like a Jeep or SUV) is required by law to go past the Visitor Information Station.
Parking: We offer a spacious 2-car garage and a large private driveway, providing plenty of room for multiple vehicles if you are traveling with a group.
