Hollywood District Duplex in a 1925 Craftsman | 10 Minutes to PDX
This duplex unit sits in the middle of Hollywood, one of Northeast Portland's most walkable neighborhoods. Whole Foods is a 4-minute walk, the Hollywood Theatre is 7, and the Hollywood/NE 42nd Ave MAX station runs a direct Red Line to PDX and downtown, so a car is optional. Providence Portland Medical Center is close by, which is why traveling nurses are regular guests here.
The Layout
This is a cozy unit — the right-hand half of a 1925 Craftsman duplex, split across two levels. The living room, kitchen, and the only bathroom are on the main floor; the bathroom is small. Both sleeping spaces are on the lower level, down a flight of stairs, so nighttime bathroom trips mean going upstairs. The primary bedroom has a queen bed and a TV. The second sleeping space is the primary bedroom's converted walk-in closet: a full bed, its own door, no window, and access only through the primary bedroom. It works for a child or a third traveler who doesn't mind sharing a room, not as a second private bedroom. If stairs are a concern, or a bathroom on the same level as the bedroom matters to you, this is not the right unit.
Sleeping Arrangements
One bedroom, one bathroom, sleeps 4.
- Primary bedroom (lower level): queen bed
- Attached sleeping room (lower level): full bed
- Lower-level hallway: adjustable futon
- Living room (main floor): adjustable futon and a seven-foot couch
The Home
The main floor has a living room built around that long couch, a full kitchen equipped for real cooking, a dedicated workspace, and air conditioning for Portland's summer heat. A private full-size washer and dryer are on the lower level. This is a 1922 house: the floorboards creak, the main floor is snug for four, and the lower level stays cool year-round — guests who sleep best in a dark, quiet room tend to love it.
Outside
The large covered front porch is the best seat in the house, rain or shine. The backyard and BBQ grill are shared with the other residents of the property.
The Location

- Hollywood/NE 42nd Ave MAX station: walking distance, Red Line direct to PDX
- Providence Portland Medical Center: close by
- Grant Park: about a 10-minute walk
- Downtown Portland and PDX Airport: about 10 to 15 minutes by car
A Few Things to Know
This is an owner-occupied, multi-unit property. The owner lives in the other half of the duplex, and a separate studio unit in the basement may have guests during your stay. Your unit is fully private with its own keyless entry and no shared interior access — the backyard is the only shared space. A doorbell camera at the entry is the only camera on the property; it faces outward and does not capture any interior space. Free parking on the street directly in front and in the driveway. No pets. Maximum occupancy is 4. Portland STR registration 23–084403–000–00–HO.
Who This Is For
Solo travelers, couples, and small families who want a walkable neighborhood over a downtown high-rise, and healthcare workers on Providence rotations who need laundry, a kitchen, and a workspace. Not the right fit for two couples who each need a private bedroom, or for anyone who needs single-level living.
A quiet Hollywood District street, a MAX line to the airport, and a neighborhood you can walk end to end.

About the neighborhood
The Hollywood District takes its name from the Hollywood Theatre, the 1926 movie palace on NE Sandy Boulevard that still anchors the neighborhood as a nonprofit cinema running first-run films, repertory nights, and 70mm screenings. Sandy Boulevard is the commercial spine — Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, the Hollywood Library, and a run of restaurants and bars sit within a few blocks of each other, and the Hollywood Farmers Market sets up on NE Hancock Street every Saturday. Step one block off Sandy and it turns residential fast: 1920s Craftsman and bungalow streets shaded by mature trees.
Grant Park, about a ten-minute walk, has the Beverly Cleary Sculpture Garden, tennis courts, and a track. Laurelhurst Park, roughly a mile south, is one of Portland's best walking parks with its spring-fed pond and old-growth firs. Rose City Golf Course is just to the northeast.
The Hollywood/NE 42nd Ave Transit Center puts the Red, Blue, and Green MAX lines within walking distance — direct to PDX, downtown, and the Moda Center and Lloyd District without a car. Providence Portland Medical Center is close by, and the Alberta Arts District, the Kerns and Laurelhurst neighborhoods, and the Hawthorne District are all a short drive or bike ride away.

Getting around
A car is optional here. The Hollywood/NE 42nd Ave Transit Center is a short walk from the house and is one of the better-connected MAX stops on the east side: the Red Line runs direct to PDX in about 20 minutes and to downtown in about 15, and the Blue and Green lines cover Gresham, Beaverton, Hillsboro, and Clackamas. TriMet buses 12 (Sandy Blvd), 75 (NE 42nd), and 77 (Halsey/Broadway) stop at the same transit center. A 2.5-hour TriMet fare is $2.80 and covers MAX and bus.
On foot, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, the Hollywood Theatre, and the restaurants and bars along NE Sandy Boulevard are all within a few blocks. Biketown bike-share stations are scattered through the neighborhood, and the NE Tillamook and NE Going neighborhood greenways are low-traffic bike routes running east-west toward the river.
If you're driving, I-84 is a few minutes away via NE 39th/Cesar Chavez or NE Halsey, putting downtown about 10 minutes west and PDX about 10 to 15 minutes northeast. NE Sandy Boulevard runs diagonally straight into the city center. Uber and Lyft are widely available and pickup times are short.
Parking: free street parking directly in front of the house, plus one space in the driveway.
