Getting around
A car is helpful but not required for downtown Hood River. The condo is walkable to downtown's restaurants, breweries, coffee shops, and the Saturday Farmers Market, and the Columbia River waterfront is about a 10-minute walk or a 2-minute drive. A car is worth having for the Hood River Fruit Loop, trailheads, and ski days at Mt. Hood Meadows and the other Mt. Hood ski areas.
Parking is free and directly outside the ground-floor unit.
Without a car, the Columbia Gorge Express, operated by Columbia Area Transit, connects Gateway Transit Center in Portland to Hood River seven days a week, with stops at Troutdale, Multnomah Falls, and Cascade Locks. Columbia Area Transit also runs local routes within Hood River County. In winter, the seasonal Gorge-to-Mountain Express serves Mt. Hood Meadows from the City of Hood River, but its schedule changes with snow conditions, so check current days and times before planning a ski day around it.
Rideshare is available in Hood River but is more limited than in Portland, so plan ahead for early or late trips. The drive from Portland is roughly an hour on I-84. In winter, check ODOT TripCheck for road conditions on I-84 and Highway 35 before heading to the mountain, and carry chains if you are driving to the ski areas.
